Recording

We offer live multi-tracking for full bands with separate headphone mixes for each musician for maximum comfort.

The primary focus at Oxford Recording is capturing quality source material. What does that mean? We focus on the source: our live room, instruments, and amps sound excellent and we capture these sources with professional microphones such as the Neumann U87, AKG 414, Mojave MA-200 and Beyerdynamic M160. Next in the chain is preamps from top companies including SSL, Useful Arts and Universal Audio. Once the signal is processed through outboard gear such as the Purple Audio MC77, the audio reaches our DAW by way of our flagship UAD X16 audio/digital converters.

Many studios include a hodgepodge of equipment that is compiled from gear collections of the house engineers. But we handpicked everything for Oxford Recording. Our vintage equipment includes a 1964 Ludwig Supraphonic snare drum, 1978 Les Paul custom, 1972 Ludwig Standard drum kit, 1982 Fender Telecaster, and a 1976 Fender Bassman 100 tube amp. All of this vintage gear works very well with our modern analog preamps. All of the Oxford equipment has a purpose…except for the wall of pedals…that is simply good fun.

Please see our equipment list for more information.

Mixing

Once all of your tracks are recorded, individual tracks are mixed down. The mixing process involves refining each element using eq, compression, reverb, delay, and many other effects and processors depending on the material. This process often utilizes both plug-ins and outboard equipment to get the best of both worlds from analog and digital domains. The aim is to sculpt your arrangement to make sense of all your tracks in relation to each other and create a unique sound.

Mastering

After you approve the final mixes, the tracks will be mastered. Mastering creates cohesion from song to song and high-end mastering processing such as eq and limiting smooths out the music so it sounds great when played through any speaker. Lastly, levels are optimized for the intended release platform whether it be streaming (Spotify, Apple Music, etc), CD, vinyl, or even cassette (yes, cassette has made a bit of a comeback).
